Yup. Bear with me.
When you want to train your puppy to behave (sit, stay, etc.), what do we do? We use a reward system. Depending on what your dog responds to, you might choose affection or treats to reward them when they do the desired behavior. Sounds familiar, right?
We do the same thing to our kids. They put away their toys. “Good job! I’m so proud of you! (hug)”. They do their chores and get an allowance or a treat perhaps. Good grades? Pizza party!
This is operant conditioning and it’s nothing new, but how often do you do it on yourself? If you have some kind of behavior you want to change within yourself, try setting up a reward system. If you put off doing a certain chore because you just don’t like doing it, set up something to reward yourself with afterward. Laundry is done? Great, now you get to have that cup of coffee you’ve been craving. Struggling to get your workout in? Maybe a trip to the mothership (Target) or an episode of your favorite TV show is in order when you finish.
In many (beautiful) ways, we are no different than animals and can absolutely change our behavior without a whole lot of thought. Get back to basics and see where it leads you!
Now who’s a good girl/boy? You are! 😉
